Medical Billing and Coding Specialists are responsible for managing health records and focus on the business, administrative, and office side of the medical profession.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialists (MBCS) play a crucial role in the healthcare system. They are responsible for the quality, accuracy, accessibility and security of patient medical records. Using various classification systems, including ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS, they code and categorize patient information for billing, insurance reimbursement, and to maintain patient medical histories. Medical Billing and Coding Specialists focus on the administrative side of the healthcare system.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist duties may include:

  • Assigning diagnosis codes for patient billing using ICD-10 & CPT/HCPCS coding procedures
  • Submitting medical insurance claims following billing & coding procedures for successful claims management for Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance
  • Entering patient charges, payments and adjustments into the billing system
  • Managing and processing electronic health records (EHR)
  • Following HIPAA compliance to ensure the security of patients' health information and the appropriate use of protected health information
  • Scheduling appointments, answering telephones and greeting patients
